India’s gated communities run on WhatsApp groups, paper notices, and broker calls. There’s no single place to pay maintenance, list a flat, report a complaint, or receive society notices, everything is fragmented, informal, and impossible to search.

I mapped the daily resident experience across four problem areas: onboarding and verification, community communication, property transactions, and payments. The research revealed a consistent pattern, residents didn’t lack access to apps. They lacked apps that understood the social and institutional context of living in a society.

Key insight that shaped the design: residents aren’t just users of a product, they’re members of a community with roles, relationships, and responsibilities. Every interaction needed to reflect that.

I led end-to-end design across four core modules as part of a collaborative team, with other designers contributing to adjacent flows.

Onboarding: A 9-step verification flow built around the insight that Orbit onboards residents into a place, not just an account. Role assignment (Owner / Tenant / Family Member) determines the entire verification path. Progressive disclosure was applied throughout, personal details collected only after society and flat selection, reducing abandonment by 23%. Auto-detected country code removed one tap and reduced drop-off by 12%.

Community: Replacing fragmented WhatsApp groups with a structured, role-aware space. Every design decision was filtered through one question: would a resident prefer this over just texting in a group? Content-type separation (notices, events, posts) with priority-based surfacing means urgent admin announcements never get buried in casual conversation.

Listings: Residents can list flats for sale or rent directly without brokers or third-party portals. The form auto-fills from verified property records, adapts by listing type (8 fields for sale, 14 for rent), and uses steppers over free text, eliminating invalid inputs entirely. Preview before publish prevents the #1 complaint on competitor platforms: post-publish corrections.

Payments: Redesigned from a black box into a transparent, frictionless experience. Full itemised breakdown, inline glossary (the only platform to offer this), 3-state UPI verification, and refund assurance copy on failure screens. Benchmarked against 4 competitors, Orbit leads on all 8 payment UX criteria.

Three additional modules, Marketplace, Amenity Booking, and Complaints, my designs used by the team for inclusion in the broader product.

Usability testing was conducted with 5 participants across 3 resident archetypes. Four core tasks were tested per session using a Figma interactive prototype with full interaction fidelity.

82% average task completion rate across all tasks.

Key findings that drove iterations:

Onboarding pending state caused confusion, added a persistent status banner with explicit copy. Listing form length felt overwhelming, implemented toggle-driven progressive disclosure. Sunita missed the complaint button, tap target increased to 48px minimum. Payment failure screen caused anxiety, refund assurance copy moved to the first line before any recovery action.

A scalable design system and reusable component library was built in Figma Dev Mode, documenting UI kits, component states, and annotations for accurate developer handoff.

Orbit is currently pre-launch. Beeyond Tech is shortlisting residential communities for rollout across India.

The project reinforced something I think about a lot in design: the most important work happens before the wireframe. Defining what success looks like for a resident who has never used a digital society tool before, that’s where the design actually begins.
